So, will Lower Merion Township welcome spring with a new attitude on "sunshine"? I say no. So if you are a fan of open meetings, be at the township building on Wednesday, April 1st at 4:45pm - 2nd floor again. cock a doodle dooo

I predict a scene. I predict banning Audrey, Dave and the other folks who want in from attending the meeting. OR they will just up and cancel these Ad Hoc meetings altogether to keep the public in the dark foreever - it's only your tax dollars, no big deal on how they are spent, right?

You know, I had a wonderful conversation with Audrey Romasco just the other day. Mutual friends connected us as I had wanted to speak with her and she with me. Our conversation got me to thinking:

When did local government stop being about the people? Audrey's desire for these meetings to be open is not only about CIP and budget issues, and neither was Radnor's school board records or Bashore stuff a single issue. These issues are symptoms of a larger problem: Openess and transparency in government. Another openess and transparency issue? The contrived meetings at odd times of day between Lower Merion and St. Joe's brokered by former commissioner and lobbyist Ken Davis, right?

So here's the deal-i-o: turning out to support Audrey is not a bad thing. Almost wish Christine Perrone and Judy Sherry and some other local folks who have striven for openess in government would come and support Audrey. We're all residents, and no matter WHAT the issue is, local municipalities need to stop skirting sunshine. And if they do, it's up to us to hold them accountable or shame on us, right?

And just so y'all know, FOIA has been updated to me more user friendly to us small fry in society. We can now make retoractive to 1/2009 requests...which means, maybe it is time to request all the documents which document how much money has been spent on "consultants" in this township over the past 8 - 10 years? One thing, where's the FOIA form online on Lower Merion's website, or isn't there one?

So, in Lower Merion, can we smell a sunshine suit on the horizon?

Look out Lower Merion Township, it's an election year. Count your blessings Scott Zelov, 'cause if Audrey was running against you, re-election wouldn't be a sure thing would it?

Speaking of elctions, is it true the president of the board of commissioners is trying to rally union employee support to get rid of commissioners like Jenny Brown? Just curious, aren't you?

4:45??

Us folks who actually work for a living are at our desks at that time. Is it that much of an issue to hold a meeting at say, 7 PM?

*GEE** why do you think government holds meetings at this time in the first place? They won't get a quorum of commissioners, so it can be behind closed doors AND they won't get many takers from the public because not all of us are to the Trust Fund Born and actually work. That is the point...or more specifically a related issue I think.

It's like holding important meetings before major holidays and in the middle of summer...

A message from Audrey that she asked to be posted:

Pennsylvania has had a Sunshine Act since 1974 and it was notably strengthened in 1987. That’s 35 years of requiring transparency in Pennsylvania government.

But only five members of the Lower Merion Board of Commissioners believe in the preamble: that “the right of the public to be present at all meetings of agencies, and to witness the deliberation, policy formulation and decision making of agencies is vital to the enhancement and proper functioning of the democratic process and that secrecy in public affairs undermines the faith of the public in government and the public’s effectiveness in fulfilling its role in a democratic society.”

Instead, they want “credit” for their perception of their progress TOWARD transparency. They express confidence that they WILL BECOME more open as time goes by. The problem is that their goal is never to fulfill the standards of the Sunshine Act, but merely to inch closer.

This isn’t a learning curve. THIRTY-FIVE YEARS IS LONG ENOUGH.

Regrettably, Pennsylvania is one of the few states that leaves enforcement solely to the public and the media. Our first recourse is through public awareness and political pressure to persuade the Commissioners to follow the law.

PLEASE ATTEND THE SCHEDULED CLOSED AD HOC BUDGET MEETING WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1ST, LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP BUILDING, 75 E. LANCASTER AVE., ARDMORE, 4:45 PM.

HELP US LET THE COMMISSIONERS KNOW THAT CLOSED MEETINGS ARE UNACCEPTABLE.

Feel free to attribute it to me if you want, or not, as you choose. Also feel free to disseminate it in any manner you wish.

Audrey
